Otoplasty

Large or protruding ears are often a source of teasing in childhood. Even as adults, they may be source of self-consciousness. Otoplasty, also referred to as cosmetic ear surgery or ear pinning, is a procedure that corrects prominent ears. Using special suture and sculpting techniques, the ear cartilage is reshaped to a more natural appearance and position, often closer to the face.

This is one of few cosmetic surgeries that is commonly performed in children, and it may be performed as early as age five. In young patients, the ear cartilage is still flexible and easily moldable, which makes the procedure straightforward and enduring. Otoplasty in adults is similarly long-lasting but requires a mix of techniques for permanency.

How It Works

  • Dr. Hu will begin your consultation by listening to your concerns about your ears and discussing the results you would like to achieve.

She always takes care to thoroughly explain the different thirds of the face and how to implement the desired changes using specific surgical techniques.

  • Next, Dr. Hu will take a full health history and perform a complete examination of your ears in relationship to your face. With this information, Dr. Hu will create a tailored plan to help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

Additionally, we can show you the potential results of these surgical techniques with our specialized imaging software! This allows us to promote an open dialogue as we progress to the next steps.

  • Finally, Dr. Hu and her clinical team will discuss the details of the surgery, pricing, how to plan for it, and what to expect after.

Otoplasty is performed on-site in a state-of-the-art private operating suite at AIREM. The procedure can be performed awake with just local anesthetic or under sedation, which is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The procedure will take around 1 hour. The incision is made in a crease behind the ear, leaving no visible scar.

Recovery Process

  • You will need to plan for time to recover, which varies by individual, but is usually around one to two weeks. A large bandage is placed over the ear after the procedure and remains in place for two days.

  • Once the bandage is removed, you are required to wear a headband-like dressing day and night for two weeks.

Some numbness of the ears is common at first, and mild bruising may also occur that typically resolves within two weeks. There is usually little pain or discomfort. Most normal activities can be resumed after two weeks.

  • Physical activities, such as contact sports, can be resumed after four weeks.
